In 2013 low-skilled workers accounted for 23 per cent of the German workforce and is thus clearly an integral component of modern industrial production. The automation and digitalisation of the entire world of work threaten low-skilled work, probably leaving unskilled and semi-skilled workers unemployed. Nevertheless, the human aspect of experience cannot be substituted. This study explains why low-skilled work will still have a continuous relevance within the “Industry 4.0” framework.

Industry 4.0 is a term for the digital revolution in industrial production emerging from the comprehensive networking and computerization of all areas of production. This study draws on the case of Mittelstand (small and medium-sized enterprises in the German economy and shows the state implementation of Industry 4.0, presents typical obstacles and challenges for the enterprises, and demonstrates the importance of involving employees to improve the success of innovation processes in the company as well as derives recommendation to improve the overall framework.
